Sustainability

We started with the aim of creating sustainable interior decor that we could not find elsewhere. We have always been very connected to the environment and we felt that Rêves des Alpes would only work if we built it with transparency, responsibility and sustainability as being the core values that drive all our decisions.

We believe you should never have to sacrifice sustainability for aesthetics; having a wonderfully decorated home while still being considerate to the planet is essential (and possible!). Our stock is made-to-order with small batch production, including handcrafted or vintage items.

Our products are made to be timeless and durable pieces that should be treasured for years to come. Our view is that living beautifully should be both effortless and kind. We offer carefully considered items that are made for people who, like us, love and respect nature and seek a more conscious and ethical approach to consumption.

Production

Made to Order

Any item that is not in the vintage range is handcrafted by us in Paris, France or in Wiltshire, England. All of our fabrics are sourced in mainly France or England, otherwise just in Europe to keep things local and have as small a carbon footprint as possible. Our fabrics include offcuts, up-cycled, natural fibres (i.e. organic cotton, linen or hemp) or certified Oeko-Tex. Our design approach is made-to-order, which means that we won’t waste any materials and make only what is actually needed. We find that made-to-order encourages us to reconnect with the importance of time and quality, stepping away from impulse buying towards a more thoughtful way of living.

Vintage Collection

The Vintage range is super important to us - we want to give a new life and story to previously loved items. For us vintage items means unique and one of a kind pieces. With buying vintage and pre-loved items it reduces the carbon, water and landfill footprint.

Packaging

No Plastic

Sustainability is at the forefront of every stage in our products’ journey from sourcing and producing through to shipping. Apparently around 10 million tonnes of plastic ends up in the ocean every year, we do not want to contribute to this, so we use other solutions for our packaging that aren’t plastic. We only use packaging that is biodegradable, such as cardboard or even compostable bags. We also use shredded paper filler and honeycomb paper to protect some of the ceramic items.

Our bags are from The Little Eco Company and made from from corn starch, which breaks down within 6 months in a home compost. Our gift tags are made from plantable seed paper and the string is made from jute twine. Our thank you cards are made from FSC® Recycled certified fibre derived from 100% pre & post-consumer waste and coated with natural clay coating and the ink is an organic non-toxic pigment. Our tissue paper is acid free and compostable and contains no petroleum-based plastics. Our stickers are made from a machine-coated recycled paper (FSC certified) with a natural oil based ink.

We know nothing can ever be perfect and everything is always a work in progress; we are constantly learning how to be better for the planet as we go along.
