Little Women (2019)

In Greta Gerwig's adaptation of Louisa May Alcott's beloved novel, Little Women brings the timeless story of the March sisters to life with a fresh and poignant perspective. When I was little I would always read this book with my mum, so this story is always very sentimental for me. The film follows the lives of Jo, Meg, Beth, and Amy as they navigate the challenges of growing up, family bonds, and their own personal aspirations. Set in 19th century Massachusetts this visually stunning film truly captures the essence of Alcott's narrative, celebrating the resilience and spirit of women.

Sound of Music (1960)

Set against the stunning backdrop of the Austrian Alps, The Sound of Music follows the enchanting journey of Maria, a free-spirited nun who is sent to be the governess for the seven spirited children of widowed Captain Von Trapp. With her love for music and infectious enthusiasm, Maria transforms the lives of the children, bringing joy and companionship into their regimented world.

The Secret Garden (1993)

The Secret Garden film is perfect to watch in spring, as it beautifully captures the essence of renewal and growth that this season embodies. The film adaptation of Frances Hodgson Burnett's cherished novel, perfectly captures the journey of Mary Lennox, an orphaned girl who discovers a hidden garden in her uncle's sprawling estate. The lush landscapes and vibrant blooms reflect the awakening of nature, mirroring the transformative journey of the characters within the story. Set against the backdrop of a once-neglected garden, the film explores themes of healing and the power of friendship, resonating with the optimism that comes with warmer days. As the flowers unfurl and the world comes alive, watching this tale of discovery becomes a delightful way to embrace the spirit of springtime.

It’s Complicated (2009)

This film is a Nancy Meyers classic, following Jane, a successful bakery owner played by Meryl Streep, as she navigates her life after divorce. The feel-good nature of the film makes it the perfect cinematic escape for spring, exuding a warmth and inviting charm that is enhanced by its thoughtful colour palette of warm neutrals. The cinematography is aesthetically pleasing, depicting homes that are both lived in and aspirational. Jane’s kitchen serves as the ‘pièce de résistance’ of the film, complemented by her enchanting kitchen garden—which is truly something to dream about. Once again, you are fully immersed in the captivating world of Nancy Meyers’ films, replete with charm and style.

Calendar Girls (2003)

Calendar Girls is a heartwarming film inspired by the true story of a group of Yorkshire women who belong to the Women’s Institute of Rylstone, who decide to create a risqué calendar to raise money for their local hospital. Set against the backdrop of the abundant and picturesque Yorkshire countryside, it beautifully blends humour, friendship, and the strength of community, highlighting how a seemingly simple act can make the biggest difference.

Eat Pray Love (2010)

Eat Pray Love is a film that follows the transformative journey of Elizabeth Gilbert, portrayed by Julia Roberts, as she embarks on a quest for self-discovery. The narrative unfolds across three locations: Italy, where she indulges in the pleasures of food; India, where she seeks spiritual enlightenment through meditation; and Bali, where she finds balance and love. The film beautifully captures the essence of personal growth and the importance of embracing life’s experiences and finding inner peace, all while highlighting the rich cultural setting of each location. From watching this film you see the sense of rejuvenation and joy come back into Elizabeth’s life, something each of us can take inspiration from.
